Walking out our new front door, we now have the choices: go straight, left, right, back to the left or back to the right. Our building standsĀ in the heart of the city, on island, nestled between tall and short buildings.
Today, we walk left. We pass hardware stores and fixture stores. We walk into a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, and for four dirhams ($1.08US; 157.5LKR; 0.76GBP) we walked out with a white plastic bag loaded with a dozen fresh, hot falafel. So we munch and walk and discover.
Looking into the windows we make mental notes, should we ever need a satellite dish, a toilet, a window air conditioner or pipes, wires, tools of every shape and size. We walk and take it all in.
For every four shops there are restaurants, cafes, and cafeterias (local name for restaurants with two tables and mostly take-away customers). Since our bellies are content with falafel, we keep walking.
Our destination is one of the oldest, and my personal favorite, mall called Madinat Zayed and Gold Centre. In there is a treasure trove of fabrics, two grocery stores, electronics, jewelry, clothing and restaurants. I absolutely love the curved escalators that greet you as you enter (see photo below).
We get what we intended and head home. This is our new, wonderful neighborhood.
Have you made any new discoveries lately?
Aloha,
Denise
