Cinco de Mayo is a yearly celebration held on May 5, which commemorates the anniversary of Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza. The victory over the French army was a morale boost for the Mexicans. I’m not an advocate for conflicts, but I am a supporter and encourager of FUN, parties, celebrations, and colorful extravaganzas! So enjoy the elotes, música, sombreros, bailarines, y piñatas!
That, to me, is what today is. I’ve seen banners on buildings, piñatas hanging from trees, and colorful streamers stretching from tree to tree along Downtown streets. Tonight, our friends, Lisa and Andry, will join us as we walk down the streets and share a festive meal.
However you celebrate or observe this first Friday in May, I hope you enjoy it and recommit to peace, joy, and love in our world. In the immortal words of MLK:
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
