Today we say, “Happy Lei Day!” and “Happy May Day!”
Lei Day is a statewide celebration in Hawaii. The celebration begins in the morning of May first every year and continues into the next day. Lei day was established as a holiday in 1929. Each Hawaiian island has a different type of lei for its people to wear during the celebration.
Here I am in 2012: I made this lei out of freshly picked plumeria flowers for a Lei Day celebration in Honolulu. The fragrance was intoxicating! My friend, Alison, took me to this celebration where elementary kids made leis, wore traditional outfits, decorated the area with flowers, leaves, and streamers, then performed traditional songs and dances.
May Day is a public holiday in some regions, usually celebrated on 1 May or the first Monday of May. It is an ancient festival marking the first day of Summer, and a current traditional spring holiday in many European cultures. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the festivities.
I’m going to a Texas Rangers baseball game today with my HH and our friends Jack and Amy. I look forward to spending time with our friends and checking this item off my Bucket List. I most likely will not eat cake, but I will enjoy some ballpark peanuts!!
However you celebrate today, make it FUN, adventurous, and memorable.
Aloha🌺,
Denise
