I remember when I was a kid, we’d go to the Dallas Public Library to read, check out books, see movies (I saw the African Queen with my friend, Robin), and hear special speakers. Yesterday morning I revisited that library… wow, memories flooded me. I happily saw the card catalog, the circle of chairs around the magazine racks, and an invitation to participate in a public puzzle on a low round table. On the wall was a lovely letter from Laura Bush too!
That evening, we (my HH and I) ‘discovered’ the music and stories of #LadysmithBlackMambazo. This amazing, talented group was a dream in 1960, of a young boy called Joseph Shabalala. Joseph retired in 2014, but his three sons carry on leadership of the music. This year marks the 63rd anniversary of Joseph’s dream. They have won five (5) GRAMMY® awards and garnered nineteen (19) GRAMMY® nominations!! You may remember hearing them on Paul Simon’s Graceland album in the mid-1980s. It’s a family of harmonious voices that I will never forget.
Sitting next to this lovely woman, Martina, we struck up a brief conversation. She said to me, “I like your energy! I can talk to you about anything, even turtles.” We all sat mezmorized by the music (all a-capella!!!) and the syncopated and synchronous dance steps.
Remember: joy is everywhere you look!
