Some people see treasures in a pile of old tools and discarded scrap. Harry Weekley is such a person. He heard our car on the gravel road and came out to greet us. He is the purveyor of Buzzard Ridge atop a hill outside of Alpine, TX. Over several years, he has created art out of railroad nails, shovel heads, bicycle rims, wires, airplane parts, and glass.
My fav piece: an ocotillo plant with slag glass flowers:
Mr. Weekley explained that his pieces are inspired by his experiences, his grandchildren, and what’s on hand in his shop. Formerly a government employee until retirement, he takes his skill seriously. He was generous and comprehensive in his telling us the story behind each piece. Yesterday, we enjoyed the skills and beauty of Mother Nature. We toured all four corners of Big Bend National Park, seeing everything we wanted to see in one day. My HH researched and created an itinerary that included the visitors center (always our first stop in places), the 105°F hot spring, some hiking trails, and the Santa Elena Canyon Trail. This finale site, breathtaking in its sheer size and beauty, separates Mexico and the USA along the Rio Grande river. A must see!!
No road trip would be complete without a storm to wash off the desert sand. Yes, we drove through two cells of heavy rains!!! I was proud of my HH for driving so well.
Finding FUN and interesting sights are easy and doable in any and all cities. Be creative and research the area. You’ll be amazed what you see.
Aloha,
Denise
I wrote about people I met and places I’ve negotiated in to see in Just say, “Hi!” A world beyond Hello. I hope you’ll read it.
